This week at the Japanese International School (JIS) was packed with exciting activities that combined hands-on learning and meaningful exploration. Students enjoyed a lively cooking session in home economics and engaged deeply with an exhibition focused on sustainable development goals (SDGs). These experiences not only made the week fun but also prepared students for upcoming projects that connect classroom learning with real-world issues.

Cooking Spinach and Potatoes with Mr. Sawai

One of the highlights of the week was the home economics class led by Mr. Sawai. Students rolled up their sleeves to prepare a simple yet delicious dish featuring spinach and potatoes. The kitchen was filled with wonderful aromas as the ingredients cooked, creating an inviting atmosphere that sparked curiosity and teamwork.

This cooking activity offered more than just a tasty meal. It taught students about nutrition, cooking techniques, and the importance of fresh ingredients. Working together in small groups, they practiced measuring, chopping, and timing, which helped build their confidence and practical skills. The joy of tasting their own creations made the experience even more rewarding.

Exploring the SDGs Exhibition by the IS Section

Another key event was the visit to an exhibition organized by the International Section (IS). The exhibition focused on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, a global framework aimed at addressing critical challenges like poverty, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

Students explored various displays that highlighted environmental issues and social initiatives. This visit was especially timely because the students will soon start their own Student Action Projects (SAP) on similar themes. Seeing real examples and creative ideas gave them inspiration and a clearer understanding of how they can contribute to positive change.

Preparing for the Student Action Project

Grade 5 students are currently building their knowledge about the environment and endangered species. This foundation will support their upcoming SAP, where they will research, plan, and take action on topics that matter to them and their community.

The combination of cooking, exhibition visits, and project preparation shows how JIS integrates practical skills with global awareness. Students learn to connect what they do in school with the wider world, fostering a sense of responsibility and curiosity.

Looking Ahead

The busy week at JIS was a great example of learning through experience. Cooking together helped students develop life skills and enjoy the process of making food. The SDGs exhibition expanded their understanding of global challenges and motivated them to think critically about solutions.

As the new term approaches, the students’ enthusiasm for their Student Action Projects promises more engaging and meaningful work. These projects will allow them to apply their knowledge, creativity, and teamwork to make a difference.

JIS continues to offer a dynamic environment where education goes beyond textbooks. By combining fun activities with important topics, the school helps students grow into thoughtful, capable individuals ready to face the future.
